The trivium (Latin for three ways), included the literary disciplines: 1. Grammar, the science of the correct usage of language. It helps a person to speak and write correctly; 2. Dialectic (or Logic), the science of correct thinking. It helps you to arrive at the truth; 3. Rhetoric, the science of expression, especially persuasion. Ways of organizing a speech or document. Adapting it so that people understand it, and believe it.

The quadrivium (Latin for four ways), included the disciplines connected with mathematics. They were: 1. arithmetic teaches about numbers; 2. geometry teaches about calculating spaces; 3. astronomy teaches about the stars; 4. music teaches ratio and proportion and is related to melody and song as it was in the Middle Ages.

According to Aroux, ‘the Cathars had, as early as the twelfth century, some signs of recognition, passwords, and astrologcal doctrine (they conducted ther initiations at the vernal equinox). Their scientific system was founded on the doctrine of correspondences: Grammar corresponded to the Moon, Dalectic to Mercury, Rhetoric to Venus, Music to Mars, Geometry to Jupter, Astronomy to Saturn, and Arthmetic or Illumined Reason to the Sun.’ Accordingly, to the seven planetary spheres—the first seven of Dante’s nine heavens—corresponded the seven liberal arts respectively; and precisely these same designations are depicted on the seven rungs of the left upright of the Ladder of the Kadosch (Fifth degree of Scottish Masonry)

Level I the trivium consisted of grammar, rhetoric, and logic (or dialectic – logic and dialectic were synonymous at the time)…Level II These were considered preparatory fields for the quadrivium, which was made up of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. Level III In turn, the quadrivium was considered preparatory work for the serious study of philosophy [natural philosophy (physics), moral philosophy (ethics), political philosophy (government), knowledge philosophy (epistemiology), artistic philosophy (esthetics), + metaphysical/first philosophy (wisdom) and theology.
